Horizontal CartoningMachine
Mechanical design of an intermittent horizontal cartoner integrating product infeed, carton handling, matched transfer, insertion and flap control within one mechanically coordinated platform.

Treat the whole cartoner as one timing problem
Product presentation, carton position, insertion and flap handling had to converge within defined positional windows. Fabrixon therefore developed the machine as a coordinated mechanism set rather than a collection of independent stations.
The complete material flow combines product infeed, carton feed, carton opening, matched transfer, product insertion and flap control or discharge around a common pitch and datum strategy.
- Material flow
- Product infeed, carton feed, opening, matched transfer, insertion and flap control or discharge.
- Common reference
- Modules were developed against a shared pitch, datum and timing strategy.
- Practical access
- Adjustment and format change requirements were retained around the moving mechanisms.
Two input paths, one timed handoff
The product infeed establishes repeatable spacing while the carton feed and opening mechanisms prepare the carton. Both paths converge at the matched transfer and insertion stage.

Keep every motion inside its working window
Shafts, sprockets, chains, cams and linkages maintain phase relationships between product arrival, carton position, insertion and closing. The timing architecture makes those relationships visible and controllable throughout the intermittent cycle.
- Working window
- Mechanisms enter and leave their active positions without interfering with adjacent motions.
- Registration
- Product and carton control are maintained through the transfer and insertion sequence.
- Coordinated review
- The complete module set is checked as one mechanically timed machine.
Maintain carton control after insertion
The carton transport path carries the assembly through linked handling and flap control stations. Adjustable guides and format dependent elements support setting and changeover while maintaining the common mechanical timing strategy.

Separate routine access from the moving mechanisms
The completed assembly includes a transparent perimeter enclosure, externally accessible HMI support, status indication and an enclosed structural base.
Normal operator interaction is separated from the mechanism set while adjustment points and service sensitive areas remain accessible. Format dependent guides and handling elements are positioned for setting and changeover.
The cartoner achieved the required format dependent performance
The successful machine achieved the nominal cartoning duty and the intended format dependent operating range. Product geometry, carton stiffness, closure method and required dwell determine where each format sits within that range.
Required project output achieved.
Corresponding carton pitch at nominal duty.
Intended format dependent range achieved.
- Risk reduction
- The design context references ISO 12100 risk reduction principles.
- Guarding
- Perimeter guarding was developed with reference to EN ISO 14120 principles.
- Machine context
- The wider cartoning machine safety context references EN 415-7.
Mechanical phase control made the handoffs repeatable
The machine achieved its duty because product arrival, carton presentation, insertion and closing were all tied to one timing architecture. Each mechanism had a defined working window relative to the others.
A coordinated cartoning platform that achieved the required duty
The completed cartoner combined controlled product infeed, dedicated carton handling, matched transfer, insertion, transport and flap control in one maintainable machine architecture. The successful machine achieved the required nominal output and intended format dependent range.
- Performance
- Nominal duty of approximately 90 cartons/min was achieved, with format dependent operation across the intended 70 to 100 cartons/min range.
- Synchronisation
- Mechanical phase relationships coordinated the timing critical mechanisms through the full cycle.
- Maintainability
- Adjustment, format change and service access were retained around the mechanism set.
- Project result
- The complete guarded cartoning platform successfully delivered the intended secondary packaging process.
